Label Love: Rhythm Section International

Rhythm Section International is set to release a 10-year anniversary box set featuring 30 tracks from brilliant artists like Ruf Dug, Paula Tape, Nicola Cruz, and Local Artist. The Peckham-based label run by Bradley Zero has released roughly 100 records and established itself as one of the most important record labels of the past decade. Over the years, RSI has been responsible for introducing the world to top-quality artists like Chaos in the CBD, Hidden Spheres, Duke Hugh, and Dan Kye. If we had to define the RSI sound, there would be no better way to describe it other than deep, grooving, and human music. Their releases have ranged from hip-hop to house, all taking heavy influence from jazz and rhythmic percussion from around the world. Here we take a look back at some of our favorite Rhythm Section tracks so far.

Al Dobson Jr. - Grenada Special

Al Dobson Jr.'s “Rye Lane Volume One” was the first release on Rhythm Section International, and there couldn’t be a more fitting introduction to the label. “Granada Special” combines a Caribbean groove and warm Rhodes samples to create a uniquely transportive experience. When someone sends you a record like this, it’s time to start a record label.

Local Artist - Feelings

In the mid-2010s, the Vancouver scene was pumping out a unique brand of deep house that was equal parts funky and ominous. One of the most consistently impressive artists from that scene was Local Artist. “Feelings” turned up the heat on Rhythm Section with a dubby downtempo and otherworldly house groove.

Earth Trax X Newborn Jr - Flute

“Sax & Flute” was the debut outing for both Earth Trax and Newborn Jr, and thankfully it was just the first of many collaborations between the two. On “Flute,” hypnotic pads and a punchy bassline anchor the track while various flutes and bells take us on a bittersweet ethereal journey. A perfect track to transition from prime time to after hours.

Phrased - Pushing (303 Jazz Mix)

In 2017, Rhythm Section introduced their sublabel International Black with a throbbing split 12” of clubby bangers from Phrased & Ron Obvious. “Pushing” features bending strings, an acid lead, and a driving groove that could make anyone lose themselves on the dance floor.

Saul - Earth & Rain ft. Poppy Ajudha

Saul & Poppy Ajudha treat us to a masterclass in Neo-Soul and R&B. There’s nothing we can say for this track that it can’t say for itself. Try to write a tune this sexy and smooth. We dare you. (If you’re successful, please email us immediately.)

Dan Kye - Moving

We at Lovers Audio were already big fans of visual artist Nick Dahlen, so when we saw his work on the cover of “Small Moments,” we knew we were in for a treat. “Moving” may be the most uplifting and energetic track on Rhythm Section to date. Fluttering arps, slow attack pad stabs, smooth vocals, a wonky bassline, and intricate percussion make for a truly joyful and memorable experience.

Wallace - Room 1

Wallace’s “Ripples” delivers the heaters. “Room 1” is a simple rhythmic workout with a huge lead and some very fun vocal chops. It’s a classic house formula, and we’re not complaining. This track is red hot, and it’s hardly a standout on this 12” of dance floor perfection.

Nicola Cruz - Neo Costeno

Nicola Cruz’s “Self Oscillation” 12” is one of the techiest outings for Rhythm Section, but its organic percussive hits and commanding grooves make it feel right at home. It’s hard to pick a favorite of the 6 tracks on “Self Oscillation,” but we’re going to go with “Neo Costeno.” Filtering pads, dubby acid, vocal stabs, and a uniquely layered bassline make this a very special track.

Klein Zage & Joey G II - Folks Not Guys (Local Artist Disco Dub)

Klein Zage and Joey G II’s “New Cross to Ridgewood” is a sonically beautiful release highlighted by Klein Zage’s heartfelt monologues. The standout is Local Artist’s Disco Dub of “Folks Not Guys,” a track that absolutely delivers on the promise of its name. This is dubby cosmic disco bliss at its finest.

A Song For You - A Song For You

A Song For You’s debut album “Home” is a modern soul classic. If there’s any justice in the world, this will be near the top of nearly every album of the year list. “Home” collects 50 artists for a deeply emotional experience marked by unforgettable vocal performances and utterly gorgeous arrangements. A Song For You’s “Home” has somehow managed to take Rhythm Section International to the next level. The album’s closer, “A Song For You,” radiates optimism in a way that will nearly bring you to tears.

Big thanks for Bradley Zero for sharing all this beautiful music with the world! Cheers to 10 more years of Rhythm Section International!
